ALEKSANDRA FLETCHER

GRADUATE SPATIAL DESIGNER

Hi, my name is Aleks. I was born in Lublin, Poland (I am half Polish, half English). I moved to New Zealand just before I turned four and have since lived in East Auckland . I have fallen In love with the country, its people and the nature it secures ever since coming here. The diversity of people, the safety of the country and the kindness of people are truly extraordinary.

I have always had a passion for the creative world and knew it was the pathway I wanted to pursue since I was young. I began dancing at the age of five and haven't stopped since. It was the first outlet I had for expressing myself and creating something to show to myself and to the world. As a kid, I would also take enjoyment from redecorating my friends' and my own bedrooms whenever I had the chance. This I also haven't stopped doing as I believe a fresh space has a great impact on the mind.

I became more serious about creating through my painting and sculpture classes in high school. This led me to apply for and pursue a Bachelor of Design at Auckland University of Technology, majoring in Spatial Design. This has been such an enjoyable course filled with possibilities for me to explore within the design world when it comes to creating inspiring and innovative spaces for the public.

My minor, Creativity and Design Thinking, was very insightful and taught me many important skills to solve design challenges with an alternative approach. It taught me to challenge assumptions, think iteratively and redefine the problems at hand, working collaboratively with a hands-on approach. Design Thinking has increased my passion for people and catering to their needs and solving their problems within the spaces I intend to design. I am an empathetic person and tackle design projects with a human-centred approach.

Throughout my time at University and shortly after, I have tried pursuing my own business in clothing as well as selling plant terrariums. I have learnt a lot from my partner who has studied and is passionate about business and marketing. Though these haven't been too successful, I have been able to test my own products and create towards a target market, trialling and making errors to learn from. Delving into graphic design and micro landscaping has also been a fun experience that has taught me the importance of catering for the user in mind.

My passion for spatial design focuses on psychology and the impact design has on people's emotions and behaviours, incorporating biophilia and connecting people back with nature where ever possible. I am now looking to expand my practice as a creator and problem solver by gaining valuable experience and taking on new challenges. I am passionate, dedicated and hard-working; but more importantly, I am excited to learn everything there is to know about the design industry and help people wherever possible.
